WHAT IS MELATONIN?

Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by the pineal gland in the brain. It plays a role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle and is often used as a dietary supplement to promote sleep and manage jet lag.

Melatonin supplements are typically available in tablet, capsule, or liquid form and are commonly used to help treat sleep disorders such as insomnia, jet lag, and delayed sleep phase disorder. They may also be used to manage symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), improve cognitive function, and reduce symptoms of anxiety.

Research studies have suggested that melatonin may be effective in reducing the time it takes to fall asleep, improving sleep quality, and reducing symptoms of jet lag. It may also have beneficial effects on other conditions, such as migraine headaches, tinnitus, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

While melatonin is generally considered safe when used as directed, it can interact with certain medications and may cause side effects in some people, such as drowsiness, headache, and nausea. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional before taking melatonin supplements, especially if you have a medical condition or are taking any medications.
